In the coming weeks, Long Beach police will place an extra emphasis on spotting problems like cellphone use and speeding during the evening hours, when all of the recent wrecks occurred.
Bystanders started CPR on the truck’s driver, and when medics arrived, they rushed him to a hospital where he died, police said.
A vehicle speeding at least 80 miles per hour eastbound on Del Amo Boulevard ran a red light, according to sources at the scene.
A 32-year-old woman was hit by a truck and killed after she stepped into the street near Cal State Long Beach.
“Speed, cell phone distraction and/or DUI are not considered factors in this collision,” police said.
The crash occurred about 6:40 a.m. near Wilmington Avenue on the 91 Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Mike Yanis, 59, who was homeless, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 6:20 a.m. Thursday on Redondo Avenue at 11th Street.
His mother told KTLA5 that her son had been at Maggie’s Pub with his sister when someone stole his hat during an altercation, and he was hit by a vehicle as he chased the thief across Telegraph Road.
Investigators determined the man was riding a bicycle in the auxiliary lane when he was struck by a 2007 Lexus driven by an 83-year-old Long Beach man.
The crash occurred on the Spring Street on-ramp at about 11 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
